Tara Driscoll, a local children’s author, released a powerful book on tents popping up around town for ages 5 through 12. It is called One tent, Two tents, Three tents. It captures the story of tents appearing next to a dilapidated house as more homeless people move onto the property.
She explains the backstory of each homeless person before introducing their tent. Tent one Is because Jimmy is a meth addict. At first, he partied all night and now he has nothing. Tent two is Gerald, who suffers from schizophrenia. He was recently released by the mental health facility and sees lizard people all over the place. Tent three is Jennifer, who suffers from depression and had stopped leaving her apartment. Then the money ran out and she was evicted.
These stories and more you can share with your children. Claudia, who has two small children, explained that she loves the book and now her children come up with a background story for every homeless person they see. Melissa explained that her child stopped talking four months ago after she read her the book, but she is hopeful that it helped her overcome her naivety.
Tara said she was inspired to write this book as a way for children to see the world around them with more clarity. Often, children are oblivious to the brutal reality of society and this will be the first in a series of books to correct that.
Local resident Bethany Anderson was critical of the book in her review. “How can this be a children’s book if it doesn’t rhyme?” she asked.
