Brooksville man Stan Mitchell made it 15 minutes without mentioning his seventh-grade science fair win at the Sail Inn while enjoying a beer. According to other locals, this is the longest anyone can remember Stan going that long without mentioning his big win.
Stan always manages to work it into the conversation, although some question his transitions. For instance, when Kelly and her husband Bill were having a passionate conversation about how much they disliked the red light cameras and were happy that they had been removed. Stan mentioned that someone at the seventh-grade science fair had been examining light shifts similar to what someone would see approaching a traffic light at a high rate of speed. He then mentioned his win in that science fair, to which both responded that they were aware of it in a long-suffering tone.
There was recently some controversy surrounding his win. It came to light that he only won after Tim Jordan was disqualified for reusing his older brother’s science fair project. Someone told the judges of Tim’s indiscretion and the scuttlebutt around town is that Stan was the one who informed on Tim.
Not the Sun reached out to Tim, who now lives in Jacksonville. He said that he did not remember a science fair from 35 years ago. He barely remembers the seventh grade. In fact, he has no idea who his seventh-grade teacher was. He did admit he could have reused his older brother’s science fair project. He said, “I might have pulled a scam like that when I was that age.”
