We woke up early and got outside and started working before it became truly hot. This way our bodies could adjust to the rising temperatures a degree at a time. We knew it was hot because we were sweating buckets. We did not need a fancy warning.

We also didn’t have air conditioning in our house, in our cars, in our schools, or just about anywhere else. If some place did have air conditioning, it was kept warm, like 80 degrees. It was not a huge shock to go from that into the 97° heat outside.

Did we have fancy heat warnings on our phones? No, because our phones were inside on the wall where they belong. We also did not need the heat alerts because we could tell that it was hot because we could feel it on our skin.

We had studied geography and we understood that Florida was a little north of the equator, so in the summer, it was going to be really hot from May to September unless it was raining. If we did not want to deal with the summer heat, you were a snowbird and only came down in the winter.

Now we get heat warnings just about every day in July and August, because it is hot during those months. We did not used to need the warning because we were smart enough to know what month it was.

If there was a warning, it was because stuff was melting. Actually, we did not have a warning, but maybe a neighbor would call and tell you that car tires were meting to the road.
