Pine Island’s Alfred A. McKethan Park opened August 1. Weather experts say that it’ll probably be open for more than five days before it is hit by another hurricane. The park has been closed since being hit last hurricane season by Hurricane Helene. At that time it had recently been renovated from damage sustained during Hurricane Idalia in 2023.

Local Meteorologist Jimothy Cantory explained Hurricane Helene struck in early September, so the residents will probably get more than a month of enjoyment out of the park. Many local residents were ecstatic to learn that they would have so much time to use the park. “This was an unexpected gift,” said a local resident wearing cut off blue jeans.

The county administrator explained that this time they are using mobile bathrooms so they can move them out of harm’s way when a storm approaches. He went on to explain that if the park is badly damaged again they are going to replace the park with pontoon boats strapped together. This way they can move them out of the way when a hurricane approaches.

Some local residents loved the idea of the pontoon boats and are secretly hoping that the park is struck by a hurricane soon. Pontoon boats strapped together are just so festive. Way more fun than a sandy beach. Not the Sun’s thorough research determined that many pontoon boats even have drink holders and bimini tops. “The bimini tops would provide shade that the current park lacks,” explained a lady carrying a yellow lounge chair. “Also you can bluetooth your phone to the radio to play some tunes.”

Local naysayer Bethany Anderson questioned the cost of such an endeavor with one pontoon boat costing roughly $20,000. She cited potential environmental impacts such as killing seagrass as well as safety concerns over the strapping methodology.  Although most residents just ignore her because she is just a downer.
